Littlewood
The
wood is managed as an educational resource. Because it is a sensitive site,
access will be by guided walks available by arrangement with the warden.
Since taking ownership
of this woodland on 4th February 2003 YACWAG has progressed
with the management necessary to safeguard its biodiversity for the future.
According to Tony Moulin, Chairperson of the group, this 5 acre wood is a
miniature
'Lost World'. It contains wetland plants and insects that were once much more
common in this area but have been squeezed out.
YACWAG's
purchase was funded by YANSEC (landfill tax rebate), the
Countryside Agency and Transco.
Lesser Spearwort, Ruddy Darter, a new - to us -Bramble and a purging buckthorn
(normally associated with dry chalk areas) have been found. A pair of Hobbies
has been sighted in the area
The cross section of a tree blown down some time ago shows how woodpeckers
have been hard at work.
The 'Woodpecker' Tree
Lesser Spearwort Fungus
On 3 December 2005 57 trees were planted throughout the wood. There were oaks and alder buckthorn. All the trees were raised by cuttings taken from Littlewood by the late Kim Stevens. The saplings were nurtured by YACWAG members until they were ready for planting. They have been protected from deer by tree guards and it is hoped that they will flourish in the peat soil.
Badger Print found in January 2006.
