Living Churchyard Project

Yatton church has adopted this project, a national scheme to enhance churchyards for the benefit of grieving visitors and amenity use as well as for nature.

Shown left is the church of St Mary the Virgin at Yatton, where a team of volunteers has been busy planning and making improvements to attract and sustain more wildlife.

The main aims will be to provide more diverse habitat for wildlife and more sources of food, so it is proposed to plant more native trees, shrubs and wildflowers, and to create more cover around the edges. If you ever walk in the churchyard and see any wildlife using it, please let us know what you have seen as we are compiling a list of species. In particular, lichens do well in churchyards. Follow this link to learn more about these fascinating organisms.

The Friend's of St Mary's Churchyard holds regular work parties. For the dates/times click on our Events Calender.
